Umuahia EEDC Office Sealed by NLC, Workers and Customers Gather

On Monday, the enforcement team of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) sealed the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) office in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.

Situated at Bende Road, opposite the Umuahia North LGA secretariat, the EEDC office was locked with a large padlock by the NLC team that arrived around 10:20 am.

Placards detailing the alleged failures of the power distributor were pasted on the gate of the EEDC office.

Some placards highlighted grievances such as “DISCOs are reaping where they did not sow,” “the abysmal performance of DISCOs is no longer acceptable,” and “NERC is no longer serving the masses.”

Under the leadership of Okoro Ogbonnaya, the Abia State Chairman of NLC, the organized labor demanded the reversal of electricity tariff to 65KWN, a reduction in high tariffs, and the provision of prepaid meters for electricity consumers in Abia State.

Okoro Ogbonnaya, Abia NLC Chairman, stated that the directive to seal the EEDC office came from the national headquarters of NLC.

He criticized the power distributors for not providing quality service to consumers, expressing concern that electricity consumers were being exploited.

After the NLC departed, there was a commotion as some marketing staff of EEDC stood outside the locked gate to collect bill payments using PoS machines. Meanwhile, others resorted to squatting in nearby shops.
