The National Assembly Commences Recess and Will Resume on July 2

On Tuesday, the Senate adjourned its plenary session and entered a recess period.

Lawmakers are scheduled to reconvene on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

During Tuesday’s plenary session in the Red Chamber, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the recess.

Akpabio stated that the recess was necessary for legislators to take part in the events commemorating the 2024 Democracy Day and the Senate’s end-of-session break, which began with its inauguration on June 13, 2023.

The 10th National Assembly will mark one year in office on Thursday, June 13.

Earlier in the session, the Senate passed a total budget of N1.911 trillion for the Niger Delta Development Commission in 2024.

This budget approval came after the upper chamber reviewed the report from its NDDC committee during the session.

Senator Asuquo Ekpeyoung (APC–Akwa Ibom South), chair of the Senate Committee on NDDC, presented the report.

As per the report, the NDDC plans to borrow N1 trillion to finance its 2024 budget.

However, some senators raised concerns over the borrowing proposal, citing lack of adherence to due process.
