Shettima’s Response to Atiku: Tinubu Benefited from My Support Dmartpreneur

Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, recently stated that President Bola Tinubu indeed benefited greatly from his support, contrary to ongoing claims.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, on Thursday, mentioned that both Atiku Abubakar and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu had received political backing from President Tinubu during times of persecution.

Shettima highlighted that President Tinubu’s residence in Bourdillon had served as a refuge for Atiku when he faced alleged harassment, intimidation, dehumanization, and expulsion from the PDP.

The Vice President remarked, “He has been a credible sanctuary for victims of political witch-hunts. When Atiku Abubakar faced harassment in the Peoples Democratic Party, he sought support in Bourdillon, where he found the needed assistance and later contested for the presidency of our country.”

In response, Atiku, through his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, on Sunday, stated that Shettima had made a mistake, adding that “truthfully, it was Tinubu who significantly benefitted from Atiku’s support.”

The former Vice President emphasized that without his assistance, President Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State Governor may have been tumultuous and could have led to impeachment.

Atiku mentioned, “Tinubu’s term as governor of Lagos would have faced challenges and a high possibility of his political career’s end if not for Atiku’s support rooted in pro-democracy beliefs and the rule of law.”

“There has been a deliberate effort, especially in the lead-up to the 2023 election, to distort the political history of the early 4th Republic by wrongly attributing the AC, Atiku’s political platform in 2007, to Tinubu’s party. Vice President Shettima, caught up in the excitement of his official residence unveiling, perpetuated the same falsehood.”

According to Atiku’s statement, he urged Vice President Shettima to refrain from commenting on topics where he lacks knowledge.

The statement continued, “Shettima should remember that Atiku did not run under the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) but the Action Congress (AC). AC emerged from a coalition of ACD (Advance Congress of Democrats) mainly comprising PDM members and other associates and Tinubu’s faction of AD.

“Furthermore, the notion that Tinubu provided a platform for Atiku is erroneous, as Atiku was nominated by delegates from all states.

“The delegates in the election primaries that selected the former Vice President as the party’s presidential candidate included Atiku Abubakar himself, Lawal Keita, Amb. Yahaya Kwande, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, Alexis Anielo, Titi Ajanaku, former Governor Rasheed Ladoja, Chief Tom Ikimi, and Chief Dapo Sarumi.

“Also present were Chief Sergeant Awuse,  Alh. Lawan, Dr. Chris Ngige, Prof Ango Abdulahi, Dr Farouk Abdul Azeez, Chief Audu Ogbeh, Chief Ejiofor Onyia, and Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, among others. From Tinubu’s Alliance for Democracy were Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Chief Segun Osoba, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, and Chief Bisi Akande, among others.”
