Pastor Adeboye: Muhammad Ali Inspires Me

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has expressed his admiration for the legendary heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali, in the sport of boxing.

Adeboye remarked on Ali’s unwavering guard and exceptional footwork during his boxing career, emphasizing his unique skills in the ring.

Speaking at the church’s monthly thanksgiving service and a special gathering for athletes, youth, businessmen, women, and their families at the RCCG National Headquarters, The Throne of Grace Parish in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, Adeboye shared his insights.

Reflecting on boxing lessons from his coach, Adeboye recalled, “I used to be a boxer, although I may not look like one now. My coach always emphasized the importance of keeping your guard up as a shield while ensuring to protect your head in battle against opponents.”

He continued, “One remarkable exception in boxing history, especially in those days, was Muhammad Ali. He defied the norm by not focusing on protecting his head because he had a unique defense mechanism – his footwork, which was unparalleled.”

Adeboye praised Ali, stating, “He could move swiftly and skillfully, dodging attacks effortlessly. His agility and strategy were awe-inspiring, earning him the title of my hero.”

Concluding with advice for sportsmen, Adeboye said, “Unless you possess the exceptional abilities of Muhammad Ali, it is wise to maintain your guard up at all times. His remarkable skill of using his legs as a shield prevented his face from any harm.”
