In a statement released on Sunday by Femi Babafemi, the Director of Media and Advocacy for NDLEA, this information was communicated.

According to Babafemi, two syndicate members, Imran Taofeek Olalekan and Ishola Isiaka Olalekan, were arrested on April 3, 2024, after attempting to transport 3.40kg of cocaine on a Qatar Airlines flight bound for Oman via the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos.

Imran was identified as the courier transporting the drugs to Oman, while Ishola was the one who recruited him as the head of the cartel. Further investigations revealed the syndicate’s leader to be Alhaji Kazeem Omogoriola Owoalade, who holds an Indian residence permit under the name Abdul Qassim Adisa Balogun and resides in India.

The dismantling of the network in Nigeria bore fruit after five weeks of surveillance and follow-up operations, resulting in the arrest of another syndicate member, Hamed Abimbola Saheed, who directly collaborates with the cartel’s leader. Saheed was apprehended on Tuesday, May 14th in the Abule Egba area of Lagos.

During a search of Hamed’s residence, NDLEA operatives discovered approximately 900 grams of phenacetine, a substance used as a cutting agent for cocaine. Hamed admitted that the substance found was part of the consignment Imran was carrying to Oman on the day he was arrested.

Further investigation led to the arrest of more suspects at the residence of the Owoalade couple in Ogudu Orioke, Lagos. A new model Toyota RAV4 SUV owned by Rashidat, along with an additional 400 grams of cocaine, prepared suitcases for drug concealment, digital weighing scales, and related items were recovered.

Additionally, NDLEA officers in Lagos intercepted two parcels containing cocaine and amphetamine that were concealed in steel bolts and shea butter. The cocaine, weighing 587 grams, was hidden in eight steel bolts destined for China, while the amphetamine was concealed in vape pens inside shea butter, intended for the United Kingdom.

In a separate incident, the attempt by Emeka Nwadiaro (also known as Mega) to export 3.6kg of Loud, a type of cannabis disguised in 36 water flasks, to Dubai, UAE was thwarted by authorities at a logistics company in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Consequently, the owner of the cannabis consignment, Emeka Nwadiaro, was arrested in Onitsha, Anambra State on the same day. Numerous other interceptions and seizures were reported by the anti-narcotic agency in various states across the country.
