Festus Keyamo reveals: Nigerian government suffers huge losses due to VIP exemption from airports tolls

Annually, the Nigerian government loses significant amounts of Naira by not enforcing airport tolls for Very Important Persons and VIPs.

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Space Development, brought this to light while supporting the decision to include VIPs in airport toll payments.

During the latest Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, the Minister introduced a new regulation mandating VIPs, such as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kasim Shettima, to pay airport tolls.

He clarified how funds earmarked for the enhancement of Nigerian airports were squandered under the previous regulation.

Despite being foremost in criticizing the subpar infrastructure in Nigerian airports, VIPs were exempt from toll payments under the old system.

“The past practices resulted in an annual loss of billions of Naira, not merely millions. Consequently, our airport infrastructure has deteriorated. I am in a bind. I am seeking concessionaires, seeking assistance with our dilapidated infrastructure.

“These same VIPs will raise concerns first— ‘Why are the restroom conditions like this? Why is there a foul odor in the toilets? Why can’t you improve this?’

“Interestingly, they are the same individuals who do not contribute towards the services. Therefore, if we desire upgraded infrastructure at the airport, we must be willing to pay for the services,” he highlighted.
