Explosion at Kano Mosque Leaves 24 People Injured

Early Wednesday morning, approximately 24 individuals sustained critical injuries in a mosque explosion at Gadan Village, Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday, SP Abdullahi Haruna, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano Police Command, released a statement.

He stated, “Today, 15/05/2024 at about 0520hrs, reports indicated an explosion at a Mosque in Gadan Village, Gezawa LGA, Kano State, during the ‘Subhi Prayer,’ leading to injuries among some individuals.”

Upon receiving the report, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, the Commissioner of Police for Kano State Command, promptly deployed the combined teams of experts in Explosive Ordnance Disposal Chemical Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) led by CSP Haruna Isma’il, along with other Crime-Scene Policemen led by Divisional Police Officer, Gezawa Division, CSP Haruna Iliya.

The area was secured, and twenty-four victims, comprising 20 adult males and four male children, were evacuated and transported to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital Kano for treatment.

Initial forensic analysis suggested a suspected petrol explosion, triggering an ongoing full investigation. The primary suspect has been apprehended and is currently in police custody.

The identified suspect, Shafi’u Abubakar, 38 years old, confessed that his actions stemmed from prolonged family disputes over inheritance. He alleged that those he believed had cheated him were present in the mosque during the incident, and he sought attention for his grievances.

With the suspect under police custody, an extensive investigation is underway and will be disclosed at the appropriate time.
