Dr Nkiruka Maduekwe appointed as CEO of National Council on Climate Change by President Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for the appointment of Dr Nkiruka Maduekwe as the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change, NCCC. The Presidency announced on Sunday that her appointment would be finalized by the NCCC Supervisory Council.

In line with Tinubu’s dedication to realizing Nigeria’s green industrial vision and enhancing investor confidence, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, confirmed that the appointment of Maduekwe, aged 39, is aimed at unlocking sustainable economic value through climate finance instruments. Maduekwe, who holds a Bachelor of Law degree, a Master’s degree in Environmental Law & Policy from the University of Dundee (UK), and a Doctorate degree in Law from the University of Hull (UK), will also serve as the Co-Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee on National Carbon Market Activation Plan, NCMAP.

With over 15 years of experience in national and international climate policy development and project implementation, Maduekwe previously held the position of Nigeria National Coordinator at Climate Parliament, an international network of legislators working towards climate crisis solutions and renewable energy transition. She also served as the legal adviser to the NCCC Director-General.

Additionally, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Mr Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng, aged 40, as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance & Stakeholder Engagement. Shelleng, who holds an MBA from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and has held key positions in various financial institutions, will be responsible for matters related to Climate Finance & Stakeholder/Donor Relations.

Furthermore, the President appointed Mr Olamide Fagbuji, aged 44, as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations. Fagbuji, a policy analyst and computer scientist, will oversee digitalization initiatives at the National Council on Climate Change, NCCC Secretariat.

All the appointments are effective immediately, as directed by the President. Ngelale emphasized that the President looks forward to the new appointees bringing their expertise and discipline to advance the nation’s goals of green industrial development and climate action for sustainable growth and national prosperity.
