Concerns raised over functionality of Presidential Air Fleet

A decision has been made by the House of Representatives to investigate the underperformance of the Presidential Air Fleet, which has led to the President and Vice President resorting to chartered flights for their official duties.

The committee on National Security has been tasked with investigating the reasons behind the subpar performance of the Presidential Air Fleet, citing concerns over the safety and security of the president and vice president.

It is worth noting that Vice President Kashim Shettima had to cancel his trip to the United States to attend the 2024 US-Africa Business Summit, as his aircraft developed mechanical issues.

Additionally, the committee has been directed to summon key officials including the National Security Adviser and the Commandant of the Presidential Air Fleet to provide detailed explanations for the fleet’s operational shortcomings.

The committee’s objective is to propose lasting solutions to prevent similar incidents that have been a source of national shame and embarrassment.

In a discussion on the matter, Ahmed Satomi (APC, Borno) highlighted instances where both President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Shettima had to opt for chartered flights due to faults in the presidential aircraft.

Another lawmaker suggested that the President should consider traveling by road to gain a better understanding of the country’s infrastructure challenges.

The Minority Leader supported the use of commercial flights for official travel, drawing a comparison with the British Prime Minister who flies with British Airways.

Despite differing opinions, there was a consensus that the investigation should proceed without the need for a formal motion in the House.

The Deputy Speaker emphasized that the committee is equipped to handle the inquiry without escalating it to a full House debate.
