Awoniyi Backs Finidi for Super Eagles Role

According to Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi, Finidi George is deserving of the Super Eagles head coach position following Jose Peseiro’s departure.

The 53-year-old, formerly an assistant to Peseiro, was recently announced as the new head coach of the three-time African champions.

Awoniyi expressed his belief that Finidi possesses the necessary qualities and demeanor to guide the national team.

Reflecting on Finidi’s appointment, Awoniyi shared in an exclusive interview with well-known journalist Tobi Adepoju, “I believe that as someone who served as an assistant, his past contributions to the country and his humility towards the players make him a deserving candidate. Everyone deserves a chance, and with the talent we have in the team and a capable coach, it’s about getting the right balance on the field.”

The former Union Berlin forward is anticipated to be part of the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin.

These crucial matches are scheduled for June 7 and June 10 respectively.
